der Eiffelturm

[ The Eiffel Tower ]

After seeing the tower from a distance, the next leg of the tour was dropping us off directly at the base of the Eiffel Tower itself. We parked right along the Seine river, which was very beautiful [ and I later heard from my Chinese colleagues that a boat tour, which they did instead of the skyscraper trip, is well worth it for the views ].

The Eiffel Tower is spectacular. Not only for the reason that it is so grand and pronounced on the city's skyline, but also because it manages to peak over buildings, and backdrop so many views when walking around wherever you go.

I was actually very happy that I went to the top of the skyscraper to get a view of the Tower. Not that I had time to climb the Eiffel Tower- the wait was well over 2 hours it seemed , and €14 - but, for me at least, I don't know if I would have been content seeing the Paris skyline... well, without the Eiffel Tower.

The base of the Tower was very neat, with the four posts having cue lines for people to climb the tower, and all of them labeled by their cardinal direction. The area was so touristy and international that it seemed that you heard every language you could think except French, which was interesting.

For being such a large city within Europe with so many people, Paris definitely mapped out a lot of space for parks and leisure around their prominent landmarks. The long strip of park space along the Eiffel Tower was no exception, and it was almost surreal to be there along the lawn and keep looking behind you as you walked, as if the Tower were going to disappear, and then trail the tower up with your eyes and be excited all over again that you are relaxing in Paris.

  2. Chris,
I love your pics in front of the tower, I only got photos when we were up in the tower, which when you think about it really doesn't make any sense. I should go back right now and correct that, oh well, at least I get to go to LA this week. I'm so glad your host family is so great and that you have all these host-siblings your age to hang out with.

    Miss you little brother!
